Make Up Tests

In our opening scene all we need is blood on the executioner's hands in the ideal of make up as all of our actors faces are covered in either a mask or a hood. For the first test we used face paint which was thick and easy to apply to Amy it also created a blood type effect and looked like a really blood wound. With watercolour you needed a lot of water to get the colour to work properly and when I was applying it was able to blend in the colours really well. Overall the face paint worked better than the watercolour as you could see it better and looked realistic so for our filming we will use face paint.

Evaluation of work so far

Personally so far as a group we have worked really well together even though we have had a few people off on certain days and we needed to put in some extra time so we caught up with everything.

The idea- for the initial idea we decided to think of an idea each and then we pitched it to the camera, then people watched our video and chose Mitchell's idea of the executioner. This was a good group effort and all of us contributed and had our own opinion on what we thought would be an good idea.

Mood board- with the mood board I volunteered to create one as I am the most creative out of the group I started by having a mood board done online however as I like to draw and create I decided to do the mood board by hand. The mood board came out really well explaining visually what we wanted to do and created an stronger idea of our storyline.

Planning and research for the logline- Amy was the one to do this research she searched any current slasher horror film and what their title is about and how it relates to the film. She thought of the title which would show in our 2 minute opening and how it can relate to the horror genre. She then finally decided to create an logline that would captivate our audience and get them excited about our film.

Film in order of events- Mitchell and Jaden where the ones to do this task they thought to the main storyline and how our film would develop throughout its time span. This was just a brief outline of what we where going to do and later in the research we developed this idea and changed some of it and made it better.

Storyboard/Script- These tasks where done together by me and Amy, we chose to do these together because we both thought of the ideas together and then transferred them on the online storyboard. In the end it took us about 2/3 lessons and one of our free periods to get them both to a high standard. Jaden did help in the first lesson on the script whilst I was finishing of my mood board but I stepped in as he was ill for 2 days and we wanted to get this finished to a high standard and didn't know when he was going to be back.

Casting and Wardrobe/location shots- They where done by Mitchell when me and Amy where doing the script and storyboard. These tasks where done really well as he was on his own but once he completed these tasks our teacher gave us some tips on how we could improve the location shots by adding more detail so Mitchell did this in his own time.

Shot List- This was done by me and Amy as we did the script and storyboard so was able to pull the information together and our types of shots to make a shot list that we would use with the storyboard to pull everything together.

Things that we need to do:

  • I might do some more research into how our film is going to be rated
  • Whilst filming take photos/videos of our group working together
  • Me and Amy have organised in a free period to test make up so we can time lapse a video
  • Prop sourcing and research into sound
  • Time of shooting

Storyboard of The Executioner

Evaluation of The Storyboard

We decided first of all to have a written down quick sketch of our storyboard and matched the shots with the script. Then afterwards we used storyboard that to create an online version of the storyboard thinking about our characters and what we could do to bring the whole opening sequence to life. With Storyboard That it was really hard to get perfect scenes and how our character would fit into it, however it gives us a good visual of what our scene will look like.

Evaluation of Scripts

In the first draft of the script we thought of a brief storyline of of what we wanted but didn't really think about what we were going to do. In the first draft we were going to have women walking around a dark church setting and flashbacks to a room which is the executioners torturing place. However we wanted to show a little background into the executioners life so we put in flashbacks of different point of his life to make the film disorientated and relate to the feeling of loneliness that The Executioner had to deal with his whole life. Overall I am really happy with the final outcome of the scripts and I think it displays some good background and nice start of the storyline to the audience

Mood board for The Executioner

Evaluation of the mood board
This is our mood board which we based the idea on the executioner mask. We were going to do the mood board online however I preferred to do it on paper as i like to show my different designs. For the colours we thought they need to be very dark browns, blacks and greys throughout the wardrobe but also a reddish-orange that would be present from the gore. Then we thought of the places where we could film so old churches, dark alleyways and the psycho looking executioner. Our main plot is based on the medieval killings so we used photos that would be shown at the start of the film. There is photos of weapons that the executioner may use to kill his victims and the types of clothes and material he may where. We haven't put any photos of the victim's face on the mood board because we didn't want to show the audience anything about himself and his personality. For the text we wanted something very old and a text font that would relate to the executioners medieval killing methods. Overall i think our mood board looks really good and represents a lot of things that we will use throughout our filming to make the ultimate horror movie.

Why we chose The Executioner?

From our idea video we found out that people preferred the idea of The Executioner the most. We think that this idea was chosen as there is already films out there that relate to our other ideas.

  • The zombie idea- Tv show "The Walking Dead" and the romcom horror  "Warm Bodies" Zombies are shown as mild horror and could have been easy to recreate but might not grip the audience as much as The Executioner would.
  • The victorian doll idea- out there is a huge hit "Annabelle" and olden storyline "Chucky" This idea can be very repetitive and the same kind of storyline of children and their relationship between the dolls.
  • The church idea- we think this idea needed to be developed more to make a good horror storyline but we took some of the church idea and added it into The Executioner to make a better overall product.
The Executioner idea appealed to out audience as there isn't really any films out there at the moment which shows this idea and its something new to captivate a different audience. We also thought that we could play around with this idea and explore into this psychological genre but also the gory slasher genre. The idea itself was very disturbing but we wanted to make it out of place to scare the audience.

Preliminary task evaluation

Overall I think my group worker really well together to create a good video. Our idea started as we where given the task, to show the shot reverse shot it reminded us in big Hollywood films when a drug trade is made for the exchange for cash. So in our video we have character 1 going to meet character 2 to trade a "product" for some cash but in the end character 2 betrays character 1 and kills him leaving the audience to wonder.

What worked well?
Storyboard- that worked really well came together really nicely and we where able to look at the storyboard when filming to see what shots we needed to produce. How the shots came together worked really well as we filmed it from different angles and shots so I was able to put the video together using iMovie. When character 1 was walking to the room where character 2 was sitting I was able to use the slow motion tool which created a kind of tense atmosphere for the scene. We did 2-3 takes for each for each shot so I was able to choose what ones I liked the most to make the best video I could.

What could be improved?
The sound effects I needed a gunshot for the end because are character was going to die but i used a slam instead of a gunshot.- next time I would go into iTunes to get a gunshot sound so it made it more realistic. Also in one of the takes the briefcase was one way round and it a different shot it was the other way round.- next time as a group we need to remember to do the continuity editing to the best of our ability. This problem occurred as filming on 2 different days instead of 1 so next time we would film in 1 day instead of 2.

What needs improving for my main coursework?
Make sure the actors stay in character as a lot of laughing was going on and we needed to redo a lot of scenes and do many takes. The planning of our task went really well but I thought that we could of added more detail like the type of clothes that the characters are wearing (for this scene they needed to be more professional looking than everyday looking)
